Great Conference!

July 16-18, 2009, was the date of the 2009 Metal Clay World Conference in Bloomingdale (greater Chicago area), IL. It was an informative, well-planned, and delightful conference. The posh Hilton-Chicago/Indian Lake resort made the living easy with tasty meals, resort atmosphere(!), and an attentive staff. Metal Clay World arranged three days of pre-conference hands-on classes, an array of 24 presenters (most of whom presented multiple lectures), 13 vendors for a colossal shopping experience, and many other activities, including the “Mystery Brown Bag”, for our joyful conference attendance.

FYI there are three main entities that present major metal clay events.

PMC Connection sponsors a week-long Artists’ Retreat with all hands-on classes during odd-numbered years. The last one, April 2009, was held at the renowned Arrowmont School of Arts and Crafts, Gatlinburg, TN. The Retreat also includes many fun and informative evening activities, a well-stocked vendor room, and an atmosphere of relaxed and complete inclusion.

The PMC Guild presents a three-day conference with three days of pre-conference hands-on classes at Purdue University, West Lafayette, IN, during even-numbered years, the next of which is scheduled for 29 July-1 August 2010. The large vendor room (with a Tech Expo attached) and all lecture rooms are clustered in a single building with elevator and stair access. The university setting does, however, present a bit of walking or shuttle-riding for the included meals.

Art Clay World holds a three-day conference (also with three days of pre-conference hands-on classes) during even-numbered years (see report above).

Each of these major events has a unique atmosphere, flavor, and ambiance. Each presents exhibits of work from the global metal clay community. All classes, lectures and vendors are screened by experts so that participants enjoy the very latest, exciting techniques, products, tools and information presented by world-class instructors and suppliers. Education and net-working are the by-words. Any question about metal clay that one takes to these events is happily, easily answered just by saying it out loud. And lastly, the value of being part of a large group of people, all of whom are fellow metal clay enthusiasts, is priceless. Nowhere else will you find the vast collective knowledge and years of experience as inherent components. Each and every one of these events is well worth the time and expense of attending.

The PMC123 Squeeze Ease (introduced April 07) makes working with the syringe a real pleasure. No more fighting with a drying syringe, enduring pain from arthritis or carpel tunnel, or not being able to control the syringe with weak hands. You are the master with the Squeeze Ease because you control the pressure easily and comfortably through the pistol grip handle. And for those of you who use paste solder to attach findings to metal clay jewelry, the Squeeze Ease allows you to use a tiny, tiny syringe tip to apply just the right amount of solder quickly and easily.

And it’s just the right size, 4”x4” square and slightly less than ¾” in height. Perfect for creating your PMC pieces on a working area that turns and spins with the touch of your finger. Having trouble balancing pieces on the edge of the block? Wondering how to protect those fragile findings like ear posts and pin backs? Are you looking for ways to flatten or dome your pieces without marring?

PMC123.com brings you the answer to these questions and more with the 2” x 2” x 2” Rubber Block (introduced July 05) with ¾” x ¾” opening through the middle. For the first time ever you can enjoy all of the great uses of the rubber block along with new capabilities. The square 3/4” x 3/4” opening through the block allows you to work in the middle area of the block without fear of bending ear posts, bails or other delicate details on the back (or FRONT!) of your jewelry pieces. Burnish or brush with as much pressure as you want without breaking or bending projections on the opposite side. Now you have four solid sides and two “open” sides making the block lighter, easier to handle and so much more versatile.
